Our Matcha
From Japan's foremost tea-growing regions to your cup. Traditional production, quality tested, with full supply-chain traceability.
Our regions
We source matcha from four of Japan's most renowned tea regions, each with its own unique character.
Uji, Kyoto
Japan's most famous tea district, with over 800 years of tradition. Home of our Uji line — premium traditional matcha with a deep, rich flavour.
Kagoshima
Japan's southernmost tea district, with a subtropical climate. Volcanic soil lends minerals and depth. Home of our Kagoshima Selection.
Aichi (Nishio)
Nishio in Aichi is Japan's largest producer of matcha. Centrally located with a perfect balance of sun and rain, known for a fine balance between sweetness and umami.
Shizuoka
Japan's largest tea producer, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Clean air and mineral-rich water give a clean, fresh flavour.
Quality grades
From an exclusive tea ceremony to a daily latte — we have the right matcha for every occasion. S–D is Chakai's own quality system.

From leaf to powder
Traditional Japanese production, perfected over centuries.
Shading
1–3 weeks before harvest, the tea plants are covered with nets. This increases chlorophyll and L-theanine, which give the characteristic green colour and umami flavour. Longer shading yields higher quality.
Harvest
Only the highest-quality leaves are picked — by hand (top grades) or by machine. The first harvest gives the best quality.
Steaming
The leaves are steamed immediately to stop oxidation and preserve colour, flavour and nutrients. Steaming takes 15–30 seconds.
Drying
The leaves are dried and sorted. Stems are removed, leaving only the best of the leaf (tencha).
Grinding
Tencha is ground into an ultra-fine powder. For S-grade Kagoshima, traditional granite stones are used, producing only 30–40 g per hour. Slow grinding avoids heat that could spoil the flavour.
Quality assurance
Every batch is thoroughly tested to ensure safe, premium quality.
Not all “matcha” is real matcha — read why origin mattersPesticide testing
Every batch is tested for over 500 different pesticides and crop-protection agents by DAkkS-accredited laboratories (ALS and Eurofins Dr. Specht).
Heavy-metal analysis
Analysed for lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. Cadmium below the detection limit, lead 0.061–0.084 mg/kg (EU limit: 1.0 mg/kg). All values well below EU limits.
Microbiological control
Tested for mould, yeast and bacteria. Ensures the product is safe and clean.
EU food safety
Meets the EU's strict food-safety requirements. Approved for sale throughout Europe.
Full traceability
Documentation for the entire supply chain. Each lot has a unique batch number for tracing.
Batch testing
Every lot undergoes complete laboratory testing before being approved for sale.
Allergen-free
Free from all 14 EU-declarable allergens. Pure matcha with no additives.
Non-GMO and non-irradiated
Our matcha is confirmed free of genetic modification and irradiation. 100% natural tea leaf.
Packaging and sustainability
We actively work to minimise plastic use and keep your matcha fresh and flavourful.
Applies to pouches up to 500 g. Larger packs may use a different type of packaging.
Natural kraft paper
Our pouches are made from natural kraft paper — a renewable material that offers an eco-friendly alternative to all-plastic.
Aluminium-free barrier
We use modern ALOX technology that provides the same protection as traditional metallised foil, but without aluminium — better for the environment.
Preserves freshness and aroma
The special barrier protects against moisture, oxygen and light — the three biggest threats to matcha's quality. The aroma stays sealed in.
EU-certified food packaging
All our pouches are certified to the EU's strict requirements for food packaging — safe for you and your food.
Our commitment
At Chakai, we work continuously to reduce our environmental footprint. From packaging choices to delivery methods — every decision is made with both quality and sustainability in mind.
Premium matcha deserves premium protection — without costing the planet.
Frequently asked questions
Hvordan oppbevares matcha best?
